Lauritzen in fleet expansion
Lauritzen Kosan, the gas arm of Danish Shipowners J. Lauritzen A/S has signed a newbuilding contract for a series of four semi-pressurised gas carriers with ethylene capacity at INP Heavy Industries in South Korea. The deal includes options for further vessels.
The first vessel will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the order represents a combined value of about USD 125 million.
The newbuildings will have a capacity of 8,000 cubic metres and provide great flexibility in servicing the petrochemical industry. “The vessels represent an innovative vessel design that has been developed in close cooperation between Lauritzen Kosan, the yard and German gas engineering company, Tractebel”, says Jan Kastrup-Nielsen, President of Lauritzen Kosan.
The vessels will be the first gas carriers designed with IMO Green Passport, and emphasis on environmentally-friendly solutions has been a main consideration through the entire design process.
“We are very pleased with the cooperation with INP and Tractebel and we look forward to receiving these innovative and flexible vessels, which represent a further milestone in the strategy, which has led to the expansion of Lauritzen Kosan during the past years”, says Kastrup-Nielsen.
Lauritzen Kosan is one of the leading LPG and petrochemical gas shipping companies servicing the petrochemical industry worldwide. Lauritzen Kosan together with its partners Camillo Eitzen in Sigas Kosan and Exmar N.V. in Exmar Kosan presently controls a combined fleet of about 55 gas carriers up to 10,000 cubic metres.
